Day 6 -17th Oct 08

Uludanu - Tanah Lot - Hard Rock

Uludanu - Bedugul. If Uluwatu is built on top of hilly terrains, then Uludanu is built on a lake. Some of the structures were seen as if they were floating on the lake. While it was sunny from the places we've been, we were surprised that it is cold here in Uludanu. Cold wind was blowing and some people were even wearing sweater.

We were lucky to be able to witness the prayer rituals in Uludanu. Women and men all dressed in traditional clothes for prayers. Outside, everyone is getting ready for a procession. Women will carry the offering on their head. Men will play the music using traditional intruments. The procession ended by the lake where more prayers continued. We decided to view from the distance to respect their prayers.

After Uludanu, we moved to another temple - Tanah Lot. No trip to Bali will be complete without the famous Tanah Lot. It's like a landmark for Bali.

Tanah Lot

I was inspired by all the locations of the temples. They were strategically built taking advantage of the most beautiful natural scene. Tanah lot was built next to the sea with waves going up at least 5 feet high as they hit the rocks. I discovered that we got sunburn from standing too long under the sun watching the awesome sights of the waves. (Apart from posing waiting for the big waves to hit the rocks forming a spectacular background). Water spilled into the bank separating the temple from the grounds on the other side. We waited until the wave subside as we walked across to the other side to get a closer look of Tanah Lot. Some tourists decided to experience a small ritual; getting sprinkled by some holy water and then drinking it.

We could not enter the temple as the temple is only reserved for prayers. As we walked back to the other side, suddenly, a huge wave came rushing in. It was pretty scary as we stood on our tracks waiting for the water to subside (not the other way round). Alas! Of course we made it back. We were busy playing with the soft black sand that shimmers like silver under the sun. Less we know, we were adding another layer of sunburn!

Tanah lot also boasted a huge array of stores. No doubt Tanah Lot is a hit among tourist.

The day was wrapped up with a fantastic buffet-style dinner at Hard Rock Hotel. Hard Rock Hotel is indeed a happening spot with a pool party downstairs. There was even a large bar with singers belting out hot hits on an elevated stage.
